Often considered to be one of the oceans not so nice inhabitants, Crown of Thorns Seastars are quite magnificent creatures to look at. They can move very fast and are voracious eaters and hence have earned a bad reputation for destroying coral reefs. In reality all of the creatures on coral reefs are part of a complete eco system and unless thrown out of balance by external influences all should coexist in a natural harmony. This is a close up of the amazing spined back of the creature and was photographed at Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia.
