Swimming along a ridge in the depths of the Swan River, I came upon a small gurnard fish sitting on the bottom. As I crept closer it opened up its fins in a threat display, instantly transforming itself from a plainlooking fish into an ornate and vibrant creature twice its original size, with polka-dotted fins. When I backed off it would close up, but each time I moved closer it would again open up in an attempt to frighten me off.
