“Neo or New.” One of my most desired of subjects, these small young batfish are jet-black with a bright orange fringe and as they grow, their dorsal and bottom fins elongate to create a most amazing looking fish. Photographed against a dark background and exposing purely for the bright orange creates a mesmerising silhouette. Then as they first begin to morph into an adult a light vertical stripe begins to appear on the body, which eventually becomes mostly grey and at the same time loosing the orange altogether. This one was just at the early stage of its colour change from black. Found across the top of Australia and on all coral reefs in the Indo/Pacific region.
