Swimming parallel to the shore along the outer edge of North West Cape, one can look inland to the Cape Range National Park, a dry arid rise of rock and deep gullies. But looking below the surface reveals a different realm, one where sunbeams dance and shimmer on the seabed in a never-ending symphony of light. This seems to be a world of beautiful silence but it is not really silent at all, listen hard and you can hear the sounds of parrotfish feeding, crustaceans clicking and if you are really lucky the elegant harmonics of whale-song as visiting humpback whales cruise past the reef on their way to and from the tropics.
