This juvenile “Batavia Batfish” was an absolutely stunning and rare find. Tiny at around 3cm tall this little fish hovered near a small soft coral at around 28m in depth. We found it at exactly the same location over several dives, so it would appear it would stay within the protection of the coral until it out-grew its size. It would probably then seek out another protective location until it eventually grew into a large adult, which incidentally is a relatively patternless dull grey fish. I stayed with this fish for most of each dive and waited patiently for it to move away from the coral for just seconds at a time to feed, allowing me to isolate its beauty against the plain background of the seabed.
