Forming itself into huge plates, this coral exists in warm tropical waters. It is also found at the Abrolhos Islands as well as Ningaloo Reef, off Western Australia. Both are below the equator but feature an incredible mix of tropic and temperate life due to the warm Leeuwin Current that passes southward along the west coast. Looking up from underneath the coral revealed its spectacular chaotic pattern contrasted against the blue clear water above. If you look carefully you can see a bubble of my breath about to break through the coral on its journey back to the surface.
