While diving in Yap in the Western Pacific, I came across what I first thought was a cascade of rocks, then decided it was simply dead coral. I was wrong on both counts as closer inspection revealed it to be a living coral, with its polyps withdrawn so that only the hard coral interior structure was visible. The congregation of coral was stunning to the eye. I have been unable to identify this coral, but that may be because I have yet to see it in its full splendour with polyps exposed.
