This giant sea fan or "gorgonian coral" was huge, dense and extremely healthy. Its bold orange colouration, seen when lit with flash or a torch beam, contrasted beautifully against the clear blue tropical water of the northern Indian Ocean. These corals exist jutting out from the reef such that their massive surface area is at right angles to the ocean currents enabling them to feed on plankton as it passes along the reef. Found across the top of Australia including Ningaloo, Rowley Shoals and out to Christmas and Cocos Islands.
