Sea cucumbers are common on the sandy sea floors of our tropical waters like the Rowley Shoals. Considered a delicacy in some Asian countries, they are often hunted from our northern reefs. These intricately patterned fat pipe-like creatures are actually the vacuum cleaners of the sea floor. They suck up huge quantities of sand, filter it for food, then expel it behind them as they creep patiently along the ocean floor. It would seem that every creature in the ocean has an important purpose.
