It is almost as if I am looking along the edge of the Grand Canyon itself whenever I am drifting slowly along the edge of a tropical island drop-off. The incredible visibility of the warm, clear shallow reef top reveals that it teems with life. Then, with a flick of my fins I leave the reef top and fly above the drop-off as it plummets to the inky depths. The sunlight, which so beautifully reflects a golden glow on the under-surface of the sea, seems to stop abruptly at the edge, as if fearful itself of falling into the abyss.
