Drifting along an undersea cliff at 30m of depth, I looked up through gin clear water to see the golden glow of the reef shallows reflecting on the undersurface of the sea. Cutting my deep dive short, I left the others in my party to continue their dive and rose to explore the edge of the reef. Before me in spectacular sunlight was the ultimate example of a coral garden in clear calm water. Corals can only grow this shallow and thick where wave action is limited by protecting islands and reefs. Shot at Pohnpei in the Western Pacific, but typical of healthy tropical reefs bordering deep oceans worldwide.
