Capricorn corals are one of the most beautiful of coral species and can grow in varying patterns and shapes depending on the available sunlight. If the light is ample, they will proliferate outwards in fantastic spiral growth, if they are reaching for more light, they tend to grow upwards in “vase-like” swirls creating amazing sculptural forms. Here with plentiful sunlight, but also combined with strong cold current upwellings of food rich water, both the coral and different varieties of anemone, all compete for the same space. The small fish in the image is a Domino Damselfish. I shot this incredible formation near Timor in Indonesia but similar are also found in the tropical northern reefs of Western Australia, across the top and around to Queensland in the east.
