Inside many of the lagoons of the Abrolhos Islands are deep holes within the reef. Dropping to a depth of 25m they can be up to a hundred metres across. Here the water is very still and generally undisturbed by wave action and so you can find many delicate and juvenile species of life. This sea star was no more than 6mm across and the polyps of the coral on which it is sitting were only a millimetre or two across.
