When I found this strange coral on the side of a tropical reef off the northern coast of Western Australia, I was astounded at the fingerprint look of its surface. This is bubble coral and it can be found in the warm tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific oceans. Capable of inflicting a powerful sting that can affect humans, it often shelters tiny transparent shrimp within its crevices. In Australia they are found across Ningaloo Reef, Rowley Shoals and out to Christmas and Cocos Keeling Islands.
