Sea urchins exist in all the oceans of the world. They are relatives of sea stars and have developed sharp and often venomous spines for self-defence. This is a close-up of one of the types of urchin found in the waters surrounding Rottnest Island, near Fremantle in Western Australia. Many urchins have within their colouring an electric blue, often as stripes or spots. In this one the colouring can be seen at the base of the spines.
