Lionfish (firefish) are impressive creatures. Almost every fin on their body is oversize and very ornate, featuring long spines which they can extend when they feel threatened. This creates a display that we see as beautiful but is actually potentially dangerous. It is not a threat to take lightly as each spine is hollow and can inject an incredibly painful toxin. When photographing I have occasionally been warned in such a way when I have come too close. They are found in all tropical seas of the world and along the temperate coast of Western Australia past Ningaloo Reef down to Rottnest Island.
