Mandarinfish spend their days hiding within the corals but at night it is a different story altogether. After the sun sets they gradually rise through the coral branches to the outer edges. They move in small "skips" along the coral almost as if they are walking. When a large male happens upon a smaller female he will chase her for awhile and then, with some unseen signal, they move free of the coral and swim cheek to cheek, almost as if they are doing a tango. Suddenly, in the blink of an eye, they mate and then dart back to the safety of the coral.
