I found it unbelievable to see that each polyp is in fact an animal, complete with a mouth and stinging tentacles, and that it actually kills and eats tiny fish and plankton to obtain some of its food. The intense colours of corals like this one are due to the symbiotic relationship with algae that lives within the corals. This algae provides much of the coral’s food source via waste products from photosynthesis. Together, these corals make up vast reef systems which sadly today are under threat from pollution and global warming.
