These shells always exactly match the colour of the creature on which they are living. They are smaller than the nail on your little finger. They attach tightly to the undersides of blue sea stars and it is not unusual to find up to half a dozen on one sea star. Blue sea stars can be found on reefs and sand bottoms but it was only on those on the sand that the shells were attached.
